Older population is respected part of our society. As the age progresses the physiological changes causes changes in their dental and psychological needs. We should understand the need and have a sympathetic and considerate attitude towards them.
-
People must be told that poor oral health / periodontal disease or loss of tooth is not age related. If proper care is taken, one can have healthy teeth and gums throughout the life span of an individual.
-
Even elderly people need preventive and restorative oral health care as in case of young adults, so they must be given advice on prevention of oral diseases and referred to specialists for restorative care if need be.
-
Edentulous elderly people should have dentures (complete or partial) in order to avoid potential nutritional deficiency problems
-
Edentulous ridges must be regularly massaged with finger at the time of cleaning the mouth. Similarly, tongue should be cleaned thoroughly with a tongue cleaner.
-
If dentures are in use, the dentures must be brushed and cleaned with soap and water after every meal.
