After the in principle acceptance of Oral Health Policy as a part of National Health Policy, Govt. of India initiated, a pilot project on Oral Health was initiated in 1999 and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi was declared as the nodal agency for developing & implementing the programme in the country.

First National Consensus Workshop was organized in New Delhi in August 1999 involving a large number of academicians and policy makers in the Dental Profession. It was well deliberated and discussed to have national guidelines for Oral health Awareness Generation and strengthening of oral health set-up at various levels. Subsequently four regional workshops were held at Mumbai, Thiruvanathapuram, Guwahati and Chandigarh to finalize the Implementation Strategies of the National Oral Health Care Programme. The final National Workshop was held in New Delhi in March 2000 to finally recommend the Strategies for prevention of common dental diseases in the country. These strategies are compiled in the form of a book and are available on written request to the Project Director, National Oral Health Care Programme.
